Starting in 1982, he began using the Super 2™ in the bridge and middle positions while keeping the SDS-1™ in the neck.

There is no specific distance that works best for everyone. We measure string height from the top of the polepiece to the bottom of the string when the string (usually the high or low E) is held down at the highest fret. For standard, full-size humbuckers, a reasonable starting point for the bridge pickup is at least 1/16" (1.5mm) from the high E and 5/64" (2 mm) from the low E. There are no recommended distances for the other 4 strings.

Many of our 6-string, 7-string, and 8-string full-size humbuckers are available for order with a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) base that features a 5-pin connector which mates with an included 4-conductor cable and makes our pickups truly plug-and-play. There is an extra charge of $10 List Price for this type of base, and these pickups may be ordered new by calling or emailing us directly. However, existing pickups with standard bases cannot be retrofitted with a PCB base and plug-in connector after purchase.

For most pickup models, you can use standard pickups in a left-handed guitar or bass. For the models where it makes a difference, you can get a special left-handed version at no extra charge. Those models are True Velvet™, True Velvet Bridge™, Red Velvet™, HS-4™, all Virtual Vintage® and Area Strat replacement models, Injector™ neck and bridge, Area T™ neck model.

Unless otherwise noted, the standard color for all full-sized Humbuckers, Soap Bars, Tele, Bass and Acoustic pickups is black. The standard color for all Strat replacement pickups is white. The standard finish on pickups with metal covers is polished nickel.

If your DiMarzio® single coil-size pickup has a replaceable plastic cover, you can order a replacement cover in the color you want by contacting our sales department. The easiest way to identify an old pickup is to look for a model number on the back. Some of our early models were not identified by model numbers, and some of our OEM models have a different numbering system. See the question, "Do you still make...?" for a full list of pickup models.
